HOW TO TREAT A LEG FRACTURE

Most leg injuries are only sprains, but the treatment for both sprains and fractures is the same.

1) If skin is broken, do not touch or put anything on the wound.
You must avoid infection. If the wound is bleeding severely, try to stop the flow of blood by applying steady pressure to the affected area with sterile bandages or clean clothes.
2) Do not move the injured leg—you need to splint the wound to stabilize the injured area.
3) Find two stiff objects of the same length—wood, plastic, or folded cardboard—for the splints.
4) Put the splints above and below the injured area— under the leg (or on the side if moving the leg is too painful).
5) Tie the splints with string, rope, or belts—whatever is available. Alternatively, use clothing torn into strips. Make sure the splint extends beyond the injured area.
6) Do not tie the splints too tightly; this may cut off circulation.
You should be able to slip a finger under the rope or fabric. If the splinted area becomes pale or white, loosen the ties.
Have the injured person lie flat on their back.
This helps blood continue to circulate and may prevent shock.

WHAT TO AVOID

• Do not push at, probe, or attempt to clean an injury; this can cause infection.
Do not move the injured person unless absolutely necessary. Treat the fracture and then go get help.
• If the person must be moved, be sure the injury is completely immobilized first.
Do not elevate a leg injury.
• Do not attempt to move or reset a broken bone; this will cause severe pain and may complicate
the injury.

Egyptian Gods

Ancient Egypt had by tradition a great variety of gods and what today can be labelled as "spirits" and "fairies".
The total of them all was over 2.000, but many of them had similar characteristics and appeared all over the country by different names. The huge diversity is due to the fact that before the country was united the Nile Valley was split up into about forty self ruling areas (later to be provinces - so called nomes) where the ruling tribe had its own deities. Almost all gods had one thing in common - they had a count- erpart of the opposite sex and manifested themselves on earth through animals.

God Aah

Aah (like "awe"), was an old moon god in charge of the moon-year (12x30 days). Besides "moon" his name meant "collar", "to embrace" and "defender".
His duties were shadowy and he was seen as a moon crescent often with sun disk upon it (picture on the left). He accompanied mainly Thot and Khons, but also others. Rarely he was upon the head of a sitting Osiris with whom he was known in texts as Osiris-Aah. He could be seen as Thoth-Aah with a crescent upon a pedestal standing in a boat. He took part in "The Book of the Dead" where he was quoted in a prayer presenting himself by saying: "I am the moon-god Aah, the dweller among the gods". His most famous roll in Egyptian mythology was in a tale where he gambled with Thoth and made him help the pair Nut and Geb to raise a family.

first aid - survive poisonous attacks

HOW TO SURVIVE A POISONOUS SNAKE ATTACK

Because poisonous snakes can be difficult to identify— and because some nonpoisonous snakes have markings very similar to venomous ones—the best way to avoid getting bitten is to leave all snakes alone. Assume that a snake is venomous unless you know for certain that it is not.

How to TREAT A BITE

1) Wash the bite with soap and water as soon as you can.
2) Immobilize the bitten area and keep it lower than the heart. This will slow the flow of the venom.
3) Get medical help as soon as possible.
A doctor should treat all snakebites unless you are willing to bet your life that the offending snake is nonpoisonous. A bite from any type of poisonous snake should always be considered a medical emergency. Even bites from nonpoisonous snakes should be treated professionally,
as severe allergic reactions can occur.
4) Immediately wrap a bandage tightly two to four inches above the bite to help slow the venom if you are unable to reach medical care within thirty minutes.
The bandage should not cut off blood flow from a vein or artery. Make the bandage loose enough for a finger to slip underneath. If you have a first aid kit equipped with a suction device, follow the instructions for helping to draw venom out of the wound without making an incision. Generally, you will need to place the rubber suction cup over the wound and attempt to draw the venom out from the bite marks.

What NOT TO DO

• Do not place any ice or cooling element on the bite; this will make removing the venom with suction more difficult.
• Do not tie a bandage or a tourniquet too tightly. If used incorrectly, a tourniquet can cut blood flow completely and damage the limb.
• Do not make any incision on or around the wound in an attempt to remove the venom—there is danger of infection.
• Do not attempt to suck out the venom. You do not want it in your mouth, where it might enter your bloodstream.

Egypt

The civilisation and culture of Egypt

Ancient Egypt was a long-standing civilization in northeastern Africa. It was concentrated along the middle to lower reaches of the Nile River, reaching its greatest extent in the second millennium BC, during the New Kingdom. It reached from the Nile Delta in the north, as far south as Jebel Barkal at the Fourth Cataract of the Nile. Extensions to the geographic range of ancient Egyptian civilization included, at different times, areas of the southern Levant, the Eastern Desert and the Red Sea coastline, the Sinai Peninsula, and the Western body (focused on the several oases).

The Egyptian religion, embodied in Egyptian mythology, is a succession of beliefs held by the people of Egypt, as early as predynastic times and all the way until the coming of Christianity and Islam in the Græco-Roman and Arab eras. These were conducted by Egyptian priests or magicians, but the use of magic and spells is questioned.

Every animal portrayed and worshiped in ancient Egyptian art, writing and religion is indigenous to Africa, all the way from the predynastic until the Graeco-Roman eras, over 3000 years.

The inner reaches of the temples were sacred places where only priests and priestesses were allowed. On special occasions people were allowed into the temple courtyards.

The religious nature of ancient Egyptian civilization influenced its contribution to the arts of the ancient world. Many of the great works of ancient Egypt depict gods, goddesses, and pharaohs, who were also considered divine. Ancient Egyptian art in general is characterized by the idea of order.

HOW TO ESCAPE FROM A BEAR

1. Lie still and quiet.

[ Documented attacks show that an attack by a mother bear often ends when the person stops fighting. ]

2. Stay where you are and do not climb a tree to escape a bear.

[ Bears can climb trees quickly and easily and will come after you. The odds are that the bear will leave you alone if you stay put. ]

3. If you are lying still and the bear attacks, strike back with anything you can.

[ Go for the bear's eyes or its snout. ]

What to do IF YOU SEE a BEAR

Make your presence known by talking loudly, clapping, singing, or occasionally calling out. (Some people prefer to wear bells.)
Whatever you do, be heard—it does not pay to surprise a bear. Remember, bears can run much faster than humans. Keep children close at hand and within sight. There is no guaranteed minimum safe distance from a bear: the farther, the better.

If you are in a car, remain in your vehicle. Do not get out, even for a quick photo. Keep your windows up. Do not impede the bear from crossing the road

How to AVOID AN ATTACK

• Reduce or eliminate food odors from yourself, your camp, your clothes, and your vehicle.
• Do not sleep in the same clothes you cook in.
• Store food so that bears cannot smell or reach it.
• Do not keep food in your tent—not even a chocolate bar.
• Properly store and bring out all garbage.
• Handle and store pet food with as much care as your own.
• While all bears should be considered dangerous and should be avoided, three types should be regarded as more dangerous than the average bear:

Females defending cubs.
Bears habituated to human food.
Bears defending a fresh kill.

Even long before computers have calculated pi, memorizing a record number of digits became an obsession for some people. A Japanese man named Akira Haraguchi claims to have memorized 100,000 decimal places.

This, however, has yet to be verified by Guinness World Records. The Guinness-recognized record for remembered digits of π is 67,890 digits, held by Lu Chao, a 24-year-old graduate student from China. It took him 24 hours and 4 minutes to recite to the 67,890th decimal place of π without an error

==========
Some facts:
==========

1) Pi is the number of times a circle's diameter will fit around its circumference.
2) Pi is irrational. An irrational number is a number that cannot be expressed in the form (a / b) where a and b are integers
3) The sequence of digits in Pi so far passed all known tests for randomness.
4) The fraction (22 / 7) is a well used number for Pi. It is accurate to 0.04025%
5) Pi is a transcendental number. (Transcendental means= Not capable of being determined by any combination of a finite number of equations with rational integral coefficients.)
6) In 1949 it took ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Intergrator and Computer) 70 hours to calculate 2,037 decimal places of Pi.
7) There is no zero in the first 31 digits of Pi
8) The Babylonians found the first known value for Pi in around 2000BC -They used (25/8).
9) Pi is the 16th letter of the Greek alphabet.
10) If you take 10 million random digits, statistically on average you would expect 200 cases where you get 5 digits in a row the same. If you take 10 million digits of Pi, you get exactly 200.
11) If one were to find the circumference of a circle the size of the known universe, requiring that the circumference be accurate to within the radius of one proton only 39 decimal places of Pi would be necessary.
12) Half the circumference of a circle with radius 1 is exactly Pi. The area inside that circle is also exactly Pi !
13) It is not known if Pi is normal. No one has proved that Pi isn't normal, so people generally assume that it is.
14) At position 763 there are six nines in a row. This is known as the Feynman Point
15) Other ways to calculate Pi:
  1. / 2 ~= (2*2*4*4*6*6*8*8*...) / (1*3*3*5*5*7*7*9*...)
  2. / 4 ~= 1 -1/3 + 1/5 - 1/7 + 1/9 - 1/11 + ...

Egyptian Book of the Dead

[ as my curiosity one day wanted to find out more about this....]

According to R.O. Faulkner, The Book of the Dead was used by the ancient Egyptians as a set of instructions for the afterlife. Not all the spells were used for every burial, but a selection depending on wealth and status. Some spells were gifts to the gods, while other were used so the person could walk, a spell for not dying again in the afterlife, and even a spell 'For preventing a man from going upside down and from eating feces'.

The text can also be seen as initiation literature into the mystery of the afterlife. The afterlife is mostly a mystery to the average Egyptian, but by obtaining a Book of the Dead, he would be able to read it and would be part of the elite group which knew what the afterlife contained.

THE PAPYRUS OF ANI
(THE EGYPTIAN BOOK OF THE DEAD)

HYMN TO OSIRIS

"Homage to thee, Osiris, Lord of eternity, King of the Gods, whose names are manifold, whose forms are holy, thou being of hidden form in the temples, whose Ka is holy. Thou art the governor of Tattu (Busiris), and also the mighty one in Sekhem (Letopolis). Thou art the Lord to whom praises are ascribed in the nome of Ati, thou art the Prince of divine food in Anu. Thou art the Lord who is commemorated in Maati, the Hidden Soul, the Lord of Qerrt (Elephantine), the Ruler supreme in White Wall (Memphis). Thou art the Soul of Ra, his own body, and hast thy place of rest in Henensu (Herakleopolis). Thou art the beneficent one, and art praised in Nart. Thou makest thy soul to be raised up. Thou art the Lord of the Great House in Khemenu (Hermopolis). Thou art the mighty one of victories in Shas-hetep, the Lord of eternity, the Governor of Abydos. Thou art Tem, the feeder of Kau (Doubles), the Governor of the Companies of the gods. Thou art the beneficent Spirit among the spirits. The god of the Celestial Ocean (Nu) draweth from thee his waters. Thou sendest forth the north wind at eventide, and breath from thy nostrils to the satisfaction of thy heart. Thy heart reneweth its youth, thou producest the.... The stars in the celestial heights are obedient unto thee, and the great doors of the sky open themselves before thee. Thou art he to whom praises are ascribed in the southern heaven, and thanks are given for thee in the northern heaven. The imperishable stars are under thy supervision, and the stars which never set are thy thrones. Offerings appear before thee at the decree of Keb. The Companies of the Gods praise thee, and the gods of the Tuat (Other World) smell the earth in paying homage to thee. The uttermost parts of the earth bow before thee, and the limits of the skies entreat thee with supplications when they see thee. The holy ones are overcome before thee, and all Egypt offereth thanksgiving unto thee when it meeteth Thy Majesty. Thou art a shining Spirit-Body, the governor of Spirit-Bodies; permanent is thy rank, established is thy rule. Thou art the well-doing Sekhem (Power) of the Company of the Gods, gracious is thy face, and beloved by him that seeth it. Thy fear is set in all the lands by reason of thy perfect love, and they cry out to thy name making it the first of names, and all people make offerings to thee. Thou art the lord who art commemorated in heaven and upon earth. Many are the cries which are made to thee at the Uak festival, and with one heart and voice Egypt raiseth cries of joy to thee.

[ INTERNAL FRAME BACKPACK ]

Internal frame packs are constructed with a resin or aluminum frame sewn into pockets in the harness of the bag. Often the frame consists of two “stays” running vertically along the backplate. Aluminum stays are meant to be moulded to the shape of your back. The bag is designed to carry all your gear internally with only pockets and accessories attached to the outside. Some smaller packs may offer the option of attaching a sleeping bag stuff sack to the top or bottom. Like the external frame packs, it is important to correctly size your internal frame pack. Some models offer a range of pack sizes and some offer adjustable or replaceable stays.

The opening to the bag is an important feature. A small opening aids in weatherproofing but makes packing and unpacking more difficult. A wide opening is handy but the longer zippers or extra fasteners are often more prone to trouble. Be sure that the zipper or fastener for the opening(s) is not at a place that will receive a lot of stress when the bag is packed and carried. If the zipper breaks you might not be able to close the bag! Most larger bags will offer two or more compartments inside the pack. This will assist you in placing heavier items in the proper place, and keeping all your kit organized.

The benefits of an internal frame pack are:

a. comfortable harness that can be adjusted and moulded to you;
b. a bag that holds its load close to your back and close to your centre of gravity;
c. easy to pack bag; and
d. the lack of projections and protrusions from pack make trekking in forests and through tight spaces easier.

The disadvantages of this design are:

a. hard to move equipment from one person to another;
b. hard to carry large or awkward objects;
c. with the backplate pressed against your back, care must be taken while packing to pad sharp or hard objects; and
d. ventilation is restricted across your back.

These characteristics make internal frame packs a good choice for treks with light to medium weight packs through forest or hilly terrain. Internal frame packs are excellent for climbing and mountaineering where range of motion and a lower centre of gravity are important.

este in sfarsit prima data,era si timpul.

in the news

Finger vein authentication technology

On July 24, Hitachi announced the development of a biometric cardless credit payment system, called “finger vein money,” which allows shoppers to pay for purchases using only their fingertips. The company plans to begin field testing the finger vein money in September.

Finger vein money relies on Hitachi’s finger vein authentication technology, which verifies a person’s identity by reading the pattern of blood vessels in his or her fingers. These blood vessel patterns are unique to each individual, much like fingerprints or retinas, only they are hidden securely under the skin, making them all the more difficult to counterfeit. Hitachi’s finger vein authentication technology is already being used to verify user identities for ATMs, door access control systems and computer log-in systems in Japan and elsewhere.

In the finger vein money system, consumers first register their finger vein pattern data with the credit card company. The data is then entered into a database along with the individual’s credit account information. Later, when shoppers want to pay for something, they simply go to the cash register and place their finger in a vein reader, which uses infrared LEDs and a special camera to capture a detailed image of their vein structure. The image is converted into a readable format and sent to the database, where it is checked against the records on file. When the system verifies the identity of the shopper, the purchase is charged to the individual’s credit account.

As a cardless payment system that promises the ultimate in convenience and security, finger vein money could help contribute to the disappearance of credit cards and all the anxieties associated with their loss and theft. When that day comes, we may only need to worry about losing our fingers.

[ BACKPACKS ]

EXTERNAL FRAME BACKPACK

External frame backpacks are constructed with a bag attached to a visible metal or resin frame. Some external frame packs offer a frame that adjusts in length, however most are not adjustable. It is important to choose a frame that is the correct size. Try the pack on and ensure the hip pads and hip belt rest snugly on your hips – the shoulder straps should connect to the harness at the same level as your shoulders.

External frame packs have the advantages of:

a. adaptability of components – bags can interchange and you can add objects from one person’s pack onto another’s (great if one of your teammates is having trouble and you want to help carry some of their kit);
b. you can carry large and awkwardly shaped objects;
c. the bag and cargo does not press against your back, offering ventilation and a comfortable carry;
d. frames can be used to make an emergency stretcher; and
e. heavy objects are easily attached close to the shoulders.

The disadvantage of this frame is that the pack is very rigid and the load is held higher up your back, raising your centre of gravity.

These characteristics make an external frame pack great for novice trekkers, and for carrying heavy loads over worn trails and fairly level terrain.

[ CLOTHING ]

Clothing that you wear for outdoor activity must protect you from sun,
wind, rain and snow, variations of temperature and insects.

In general, your clothing should be comfortable and loose fitting. Try all your individual items on before going out to ensure fit and that there is no damage or missing parts. Check your range of motion with all your layers on and be sure that you can reach and stretch without being bound by your clothes. You can complement your cold weather clothing with mitts and a toque made from a good insulator that sheds moisture. Keep all your clothes as clean as possible, repair and wash when required.

Moisture management is a technique of controlling moisture build-up in your clothes. Along with choosing appropriate outdoor clothing you can manage moisture by:

a. ventilating your clothing by opening cuffs, “pit zips” and the front zipper;
b. wearing clean layers that are loose that don’t retain moisture;
c. removing your hat when participating in strenuous activities – except when in direct sunlight;
d. choosing insulation that is appropriate to the temperature and activity, and adding or subtracting layers for changes as they occur; and
e. keeping your socks clean and dry. Always carry extra socks, and change your socks regularly.

aikido

Although aikido is a relatively recent innovation within the world of martial arts, it is heir to a rich cultural and philosophical background. Aikido was created in Japan by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969). Before creating aikido, Ueshiba trained extensively in several varieties of jujitsu, as well as sword and spear fighting. Ueshiba also immersed himself in religious studies and developed an ideology devoted to universal socio-political harmony. Incorporating these principles into his martial art, Ueshiba developed many aspects of aikido in concert with his philosophical and religious ideology.

Aikido is not primarily a system of combat, but rather a means of self-cultivation and improvement. Aikido has no tournaments, competitions, contests, or "sparring." Instead, all aikido techniques are learned cooperatively at a pace commensurate with the abilities of each trainee. According to the founder, the goal of aikido is not the defeat of others, but the defeat of the negative characteristics which inhabit one's own mind and inhibit its functioning.

At the same time, the potential of aikido as a means of self-defense should not be ignored. One reason for the prohibition of competition in aikido is that many aikido techniques would have to be excluded because of their potential to cause serious injury. By training cooperatively, even potentially lethal techniques can be practiced without substantial risk.

It must be emphasized that there are no shortcuts to proficiency in aikido (or in anything else, for that matter). Consequently, attaining proficiency in aikido is simply a matter of sustained and dedicated training. No one becomes an expert in just a few months or years.

aikido - Morihei Ueshiba

Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969) was history's greatest martial artist. Even as an old man of eighty, he could disarm any foe, down any number of attackers, and pin an opponent with a single finger. Although invincible as a warrior, he was above all a man of peace who detested fighting, war, and any kind of violence. His way was Aikido, which can be translated as "The Art of Peace." Morihei Ueshiba is referred to by the practitioners of Aikido as O Sensei, "The Great Teacher".

Although Aikido originated with Morihei in Japan, it was intended to be a gift for all humankind. Some have chosen, or will select in the future, Aikido as their own particular Way, practicing it on the mats and applying it to their daily lives. Many more have been and will be inspired by the universal message of the Art of Peace and its implications for our world.
