HOW TO ESCAPE FROM A BEAR

1. Lie still and quiet.

[ Documented attacks show that an attack by a mother bear often ends when the person stops fighting. ]

2. Stay where you are and do not climb a tree to escape a bear.

[ Bears can climb trees quickly and easily and will come after you. The odds are that the bear will leave you alone if you stay put. ]

3. If you are lying still and the bear attacks, strike back with anything you can.

[ Go for the bear's eyes or its snout. ]

What to do IF YOU SEE a BEAR

Make your presence known by talking loudly, clapping, singing, or occasionally calling out. (Some people prefer to wear bells.)
Whatever you do, be heard—it does not pay to surprise a bear. Remember, bears can run much faster than humans. Keep children close at hand and within sight. There is no guaranteed minimum safe distance from a bear: the farther, the better.

If you are in a car, remain in your vehicle. Do not get out, even for a quick photo. Keep your windows up. Do not impede the bear from crossing the road

How to AVOID AN ATTACK

• Reduce or eliminate food odors from yourself, your camp, your clothes, and your vehicle.
• Do not sleep in the same clothes you cook in.
• Store food so that bears cannot smell or reach it.
• Do not keep food in your tent—not even a chocolate bar.
• Properly store and bring out all garbage.
• Handle and store pet food with as much care as your own.
• While all bears should be considered dangerous and should be avoided, three types should be regarded as more dangerous than the average bear:

Females defending cubs.
Bears habituated to human food.
Bears defending a fresh kill.

Even long before computers have calculated pi, memorizing a record number of digits became an obsession for some people. A Japanese man named Akira Haraguchi claims to have memorized 100,000 decimal places.

This, however, has yet to be verified by Guinness World Records. The Guinness-recognized record for remembered digits of π is 67,890 digits, held by Lu Chao, a 24-year-old graduate student from China. It took him 24 hours and 4 minutes to recite to the 67,890th decimal place of π without an error

==========
Some facts:
==========

1) Pi is the number of times a circle's diameter will fit around its circumference.
2) Pi is irrational. An irrational number is a number that cannot be expressed in the form (a / b) where a and b are integers
3) The sequence of digits in Pi so far passed all known tests for randomness.
4) The fraction (22 / 7) is a well used number for Pi. It is accurate to 0.04025%
5) Pi is a transcendental number. (Transcendental means= Not capable of being determined by any combination of a finite number of equations with rational integral coefficients.)
6) In 1949 it took ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Intergrator and Computer) 70 hours to calculate 2,037 decimal places of Pi.
7) There is no zero in the first 31 digits of Pi
8) The Babylonians found the first known value for Pi in around 2000BC -They used (25/8).
9) Pi is the 16th letter of the Greek alphabet.
10) If you take 10 million random digits, statistically on average you would expect 200 cases where you get 5 digits in a row the same. If you take 10 million digits of Pi, you get exactly 200.
11) If one were to find the circumference of a circle the size of the known universe, requiring that the circumference be accurate to within the radius of one proton only 39 decimal places of Pi would be necessary.
12) Half the circumference of a circle with radius 1 is exactly Pi. The area inside that circle is also exactly Pi !
13) It is not known if Pi is normal. No one has proved that Pi isn't normal, so people generally assume that it is.
14) At position 763 there are six nines in a row. This is known as the Feynman Point
15) Other ways to calculate Pi:
  1. / 2 ~= (2*2*4*4*6*6*8*8*...) / (1*3*3*5*5*7*7*9*...)
  2. / 4 ~= 1 -1/3 + 1/5 - 1/7 + 1/9 - 1/11 + ...

Egyptian Book of the Dead

[ as my curiosity one day wanted to find out more about this....]

According to R.O. Faulkner, The Book of the Dead was used by the ancient Egyptians as a set of instructions for the afterlife. Not all the spells were used for every burial, but a selection depending on wealth and status. Some spells were gifts to the gods, while other were used so the person could walk, a spell for not dying again in the afterlife, and even a spell 'For preventing a man from going upside down and from eating feces'.

The text can also be seen as initiation literature into the mystery of the afterlife. The afterlife is mostly a mystery to the average Egyptian, but by obtaining a Book of the Dead, he would be able to read it and would be part of the elite group which knew what the afterlife contained.

THE PAPYRUS OF ANI
(THE EGYPTIAN BOOK OF THE DEAD)

HYMN TO OSIRIS

"Homage to thee, Osiris, Lord of eternity, King of the Gods, whose names are manifold, whose forms are holy, thou being of hidden form in the temples, whose Ka is holy. Thou art the governor of Tattu (Busiris), and also the mighty one in Sekhem (Letopolis). Thou art the Lord to whom praises are ascribed in the nome of Ati, thou art the Prince of divine food in Anu. Thou art the Lord who is commemorated in Maati, the Hidden Soul, the Lord of Qerrt (Elephantine), the Ruler supreme in White Wall (Memphis). Thou art the Soul of Ra, his own body, and hast thy place of rest in Henensu (Herakleopolis). Thou art the beneficent one, and art praised in Nart. Thou makest thy soul to be raised up. Thou art the Lord of the Great House in Khemenu (Hermopolis). Thou art the mighty one of victories in Shas-hetep, the Lord of eternity, the Governor of Abydos. The path of his throne is in Ta-tcheser (a part of Abydos). Thy name is established in the mouths of men. Thou art the substance of Two Lands (Egypt). Thou art Tem, the feeder of Kau (Doubles), the Governor of the Companies of the gods. Thou art the beneficent Spirit among the spirits. The god of the Celestial Ocean (Nu) draweth from thee his waters. Thou sendest forth the north wind at eventide, and breath from thy nostrils to the satisfaction of thy heart. Thy heart reneweth its youth, thou producest the.... The stars in the celestial heights are obedient unto thee, and the great doors of the sky open themselves before thee. Thou art he to whom praises are ascribed in the southern heaven, and thanks are given for thee in the northern heaven. The imperishable stars are under thy supervision, and the stars which never set are thy thrones. Offerings appear before thee at the decree of Keb. The Companies of the Gods praise thee, and the gods of the Tuat (Other World) smell the earth in paying homage to thee. The uttermost parts of the earth bow before thee, and the limits of the skies entreat thee with supplications when they see thee. The holy ones are overcome before thee, and all Egypt offereth thanksgiving unto thee when it meeteth Thy Majesty. Thou art a shining Spirit-Body, the governor of Spirit-Bodies; permanent is thy rank, established is thy rule. Thou art the well-doing Sekhem (Power) of the Company of the Gods, gracious is thy face, and beloved by him that seeth it. Thy fear is set in all the lands by reason of thy perfect love, and they cry out to thy name making it the first of names, and all people make offerings to thee. Thou art the lord who art commemorated in heaven and upon earth. Many are the cries which are made to thee at the Uak festival, and with one heart and voice Egypt raiseth cries of joy to thee.
