Finger vein authentication technology

On July 24, Hitachi announced the development of a biometric cardless credit payment system, called “finger vein money,” which allows shoppers to pay for purchases using only their fingertips. The company plans to begin field testing the finger vein money in September.

Finger vein money relies on Hitachi’s finger vein authentication technology, which verifies a person’s identity by reading the pattern of blood vessels in his or her fingers. These blood vessel patterns are unique to each individual, much like fingerprints or retinas, only they are hidden securely under the skin, making them all the more difficult to counterfeit. Hitachi’s finger vein authentication technology is already being used to verify user identities for ATMs, door access control systems and computer log-in systems in Japan and elsewhere.

In the finger vein money system, consumers first register their finger vein pattern data with the credit card company. The data is then entered into a database along with the individual’s credit account information. Later, when shoppers want to pay for something, they simply go to the cash register and place their finger in a vein reader, which uses infrared LEDs and a special camera to capture a detailed image of their vein structure. The image is converted into a readable format and sent to the database, where it is checked against the records on file. When the system verifies the identity of the shopper, the purchase is charged to the individual’s credit account.

As a cardless payment system that promises the ultimate in convenience and security, finger vein money could help contribute to the disappearance of credit cards and all the anxieties associated with their loss and theft. When that day comes, we may only need to worry about losing our fingers.

EXTERNAL FRAME BACKPACK

External frame backpacks are constructed with a bag attached to a visible metal or resin frame. Some external frame packs offer a frame that adjusts in length, however most are not adjustable. It is important to choose a frame that is the correct size. Try the pack on and ensure the hip pads and hip belt rest snugly on your hips – the shoulder straps should connect to the harness at the same level as your shoulders.

External frame packs have the advantages of:

a. adaptability of components – bags can interchange and you can add objects from one person’s pack onto another’s (great if one of your teammates is having trouble and you want to help carry some of their kit);
b. you can carry large and awkwardly shaped objects;
c. the bag and cargo does not press against your back, offering ventilation and a comfortable carry;
d. frames can be used to make an emergency stretcher; and
e. heavy objects are easily attached close to the shoulders.

The disadvantage of this frame is that the pack is very rigid and the load is held higher up your back, raising your centre of gravity.

These characteristics make an external frame pack great for novice trekkers, and for carrying heavy loads over worn trails and fairly level terrain.

Clothing that you wear for outdoor activity must protect you from sun,
wind, rain and snow, variations of temperature and insects.

In general, your clothing should be comfortable and loose fitting. Try all your individual items on before going out to ensure fit and that there is no damage or missing parts. Check your range of motion with all your layers on and be sure that you can reach and stretch without being bound by your clothes. You can complement your cold weather clothing with mitts and a toque made from a good insulator that sheds moisture. Keep all your clothes as clean as possible, repair and wash when required.

Moisture management is a technique of controlling moisture build-up in your clothes. Along with choosing appropriate outdoor clothing you can manage moisture by:

a. ventilating your clothing by opening cuffs, “pit zips” and the front zipper;
b. wearing clean layers that are loose that don’t retain moisture;
c. removing your hat when participating in strenuous activities – except when in direct sunlight;
d. choosing insulation that is appropriate to the temperature and activity, and adding or subtracting layers for changes as they occur; and
e. keeping your socks clean and dry. Always carry extra socks, and change your socks regularly.

aikido

Although aikido is a relatively recent innovation within the world of martial arts, it is heir to a rich cultural and philosophical background. Aikido was created in Japan by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969). Before creating aikido, Ueshiba trained extensively in several varieties of jujitsu, as well as sword and spear fighting. Ueshiba also immersed himself in religious studies and developed an ideology devoted to universal socio-political harmony. Incorporating these principles into his martial art, Ueshiba developed many aspects of aikido in concert with his philosophical and religious ideology.

Aikido is not primarily a system of combat, but rather a means of self-cultivation and improvement. Aikido has no tournaments, competitions, contests, or "sparring." Instead, all aikido techniques are learned cooperatively at a pace commensurate with the abilities of each trainee. According to the founder, the goal of aikido is not the defeat of others, but the defeat of the negative characteristics which inhabit one's own mind and inhibit its functioning.

At the same time, the potential of aikido as a means of self-defense should not be ignored. One reason for the prohibition of competition in aikido is that many aikido techniques would have to be excluded because of their potential to cause serious injury. By training cooperatively, even potentially lethal techniques can be practiced without substantial risk.

It must be emphasized that there are no shortcuts to proficiency in aikido (or in anything else, for that matter). Consequently, attaining proficiency in aikido is simply a matter of sustained and dedicated training. No one becomes an expert in just a few months or years.

aikido - Morihei Ueshiba

Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969) was history's greatest martial artist. Even as an old man of eighty, he could disarm any foe, down any number of attackers, and pin an opponent with a single finger. Although invincible as a warrior, he was above all a man of peace who detested fighting, war, and any kind of violence. His way was Aikido, which can be translated as "The Art of Peace." Morihei Ueshiba is referred to by the practitioners of Aikido as O Sensei, "The Great Teacher".

Although Aikido originated with Morihei in Japan, it was intended to be a gift for all humankind. Some have chosen, or will select in the future, Aikido as their own particular Way, practicing it on the mats and applying it to their daily lives. Many more have been and will be inspired by the universal message of the Art of Peace and its implications for our world.
